Welcome to York & District
Deaf Society

York and District Deaf Society: Empowering the Deaf community in York and surrounding areas. Based at Oloman House, the society offers a welcoming space for the Deaf community, including rooms and facilities available for hire for events, groups, and more.

The Evolution of the York & District Deaf Society

The Deaf Community in York gained its first permanent base in 1934 with the purchase of Bootham House, officially opened in 1935. Missioner Robert S. Oloman restructured the York & District Deaf Society (YDDS), extending its reach and improving services. Oloman provided unwavering support, including education, employment, and community activities for Deaf individuals. Over the decades, YDDS evolved, with leadership transitioning to Deaf members, and the removal of the term "Dumb" from its name. Despite challenges, including Bootham House's sale in 2013, the community persisted, renaming their premises Oloman House in honor of Oloman's contributions.
